September in the Garden

WELCOME SPRING - this is an exciting time of year with gardens beginning to burst into life.

With warmer days now here there's plenty to keep us busy.  It's time to revive gardens by giving the soil some TLC and planting our gardens with vibrant colours, luscious foliage and filling the vege patch with your favourite edibles.

FLOWER GARDEN

ROSES:

Plant new season roses!  To view our comprehensive 2023 Rose Collection click here

Prepare the soil first by adding organic compost and plant with Ican Slow Food 24 Month fertiliser.

Fertilise existing roses with Tui Rose Fertiliser and apply Magic Compost around the base to condition the soil and conserve moisture.  Dig this in lightly.

Continue your regular spray programme - to view our Rose & Ornamentals Health Care Programme click here (or call in for a copy).

PERENNIALS:
Plant perennials for spring and summer flowering - Federation daisies,   geraniums, osteospermum (Cape Daisy), lavender, alstromeria (great picking), arctotis, nemesia, gaura, dianthus.  Ask our friendly team for help.

ANNUALS:
For instant colour plant your favourite annuals – petunia, begonia, lobelia (ideal for hanging baskets or borders), marigolds, sweet peas, marigolds, verbena, primula, sweet william, salvia...

Bulbs - leave the foliage to die down naturally and fertilise with Bulb Food to ensure good flowering next year.

CONTAINER PLANTING:
Replace potting mix, fertilise and replant.  Ensure you use a quality potting mix fit for purpose eg Ican Premium Potting Mix.

Pots and hanging baskets filled with colourful flowers always look great.  We have a large selection of pots in many shapes, sizes and colours.  Get inventive and create a garden in a pot ie a selection of several plants in one big pot for interest.

KITCHEN GARDEN

Prepare and add more goodness to the vege patch - dig in Ican Real Blood and Bone, sheep pellets, compost or vege mix.  Our Ican Premium Compost is fabulous, as is our Ican Planting Mix!

Ican Ocean Grow is a fantastic liquid fish fertiliser which can be applied regularly and will really get your veges growing.

Sow seeds/plant seedlings every few weeks for continual harvests in the months ahead.

Sow Ican seeds.  Ican Seeds are New Zealand’s best quality and most productive seed range.  Exclusive to Décor Gardenworld in the Bay of Plenty.  Beetroot, Carrot Europa, Peas Magic, Radish, Sweetcorn, Beans and Tomato - the choice is vast!

FRUIT, BERRIES AND CITRUS

Plant a range of fruit trees and berries and you'll be rewarded with fresh fruit throughout the year.  Give them a sheltered spot with as much sun as possible.  We have Tauranga's best fruit trees - top grade and advanced growth and selected for BOP conditions.

Plums, apricots, peaches, nectarines, apples and pears, including dual grafted varieties.
Citrus - mandarins, oranges, lemons and limes.

Plant strawberries in the garden bed, vege patch, hanging baskets or planter towers.  For the best results plant into Daltons Strawberry Mix and fertilise regularly with Tui Strawberry Food.

Prune - Complete pruning of fruit trees - prune to a size suitable for your garden and to produce not only a good quantity but also a good quality of fruit - feijoas, grape, passionfruit vines and berry canes (if not done last month).  Protect large stem cuts from disease by sealing with pruning paint.  See our videos on pruning.

Fertilise citrus trees this month and new and existing fruit trees (if not done last month) with a long-term fertiliser and Tui Citrus Fertiliser (suitable for all fruiting trees).

Spray - Maintain your regular fruit tree spray programme.  It is important to spray with the correct product at the correct time so please ask one of our knowledgeable staff or click here to view our Fruiting Plants Health Care Programme (or call in for a copy).

TREES & SHRUBS

Plant new trees and shrubs and with so many now flowering it's a great time to choose:

Rhododendrons, Magnolias, Camellias, Azaleas, Grevillea, Leucadendron (fantastic for cut flowers and floral work), Lilacs (fragrant flowers and very hardy)...

For the birds plant - Coprosma, Corokia, Five Finger, Flax, Grevillea, Kowhai, Melia, Pohutukawa, Protea, Rewarewa, Viburnum, Waratah...

Maples look great in all gardens.  Their new growth is stunning at this time of year.

Plant new hedges.  Fantastic hedging plants are Japanese Box, Camellia Setsugekka, Corokia, Teucrium and NZ's favourite, Griselinia Broadway Mint!  We have a whole range of hedging grade plants available now.

Box Hedging - spray with Grosafe FreeFlo Copper and Grosafe EnSpray 99 Oil alternating with Grosafe Buxus Blight Fighter to prevent the spread of Box Blight (Japanese Box is far more resistant than English Box to Box Blight).

Fertilise all new and existing trees and shrubs with Ican 24 Month Slow Release Fertiliser.  Check your stakes and ties too.

Fertilise acid loving plants with Tui Acid Fertiliser (if not done last month) - Camellia's, Rhododendrons, Azaleas.

Prune deciduous trees and hedges to desired shape and size.

Prune Hydrangeas to double buds and remove old wood (if not done last month).  Hydrangea tip - sprinkle lime for pink flowers and aluminium sulphate for blue.  See our video about Hydrangeas.

Trim and shape camellias as they finish flowering.

Prune Hibiscus once the danger of frosts has passed, feed with a general garden fertiliser and spray throughout the season with Grosafe Free Flo Copper.

TREES FOR SMALL GARDENS

Beautifully shaped standards make spectacular landscape features - Camellia, Michelia, Laurel ...

Weeping Maples are ideal when space is limited - Crimson Queen and Viridis will impress with their gorgeous form and colour.

Liquidambar Gumballs, Robinia Mop Top, Cercis, Dogwood, Weeping Cherries and Crabapples are also great for small gardens.

MAINTENANCE

Good soil, feeding and watering is the key to great plants, flowers, fruit and vege production.

Fertilise with the fantastic liquid Ican Fast Food or Ican Ocean Grow fish fertiliser or the Tui range of Citrus Food, Strawberry Food and Rose Food.

Slow release Novatec is an ideal fertiliser for trees, shrubs, palms, fruit and veges.

Continue to protect frost tender plants with frost cloth at night or spray with Vaporgard.  Vaporgard is an excellent organic product which is easily sprayed over foliage and provides up to 3 months protection.

Hygiene is important in the garden so clear away diseased leaves and prunings and sterilise secateurs, hedge trimmers etc before and after use (bleach is a good sterilant).

Pests and Diseases - check all plants regularly- it's easier to deal with them early before they take hold and do too much damage.

If fungus and bugs are present they need to be kept under control with regular spraying.  We recommend:

Grosafe FreeFlo Copper to control fungus diseases on all fruit, vegetables and ornamentals.
Grosafe EnSpray 99 Oil for the control of sucking insects on all fruit, vegetables and ornamentals.
Success Ultra for caterpillars, thrips and leafroller.

Mavrik for psylids, aphids and thrips.

Grosafe Groventive for all sucking insects – this is systemic so very effective.

Apply Blitzem, Quash (if you have animals) or Baysol (long acting) to control slugs and snails - particularly around new seedlings.

Mulch to suppress weeds, maintain soil warmth, preserve water and add nutrients with Pea Straw Mulch or Daltons Mulch and Grow.

LAWNS

Sow new lawns - choose an appropriate lawn seed for your lifestyle.

Fertilise lawns with an even application of Tui Lawn Fertiliser, ensuring it is watered in well.

Treat mossy areas with Tui Moss Control.

Spray to eliminate Onehunga Weed prickles and broadleaf weeds with Yates Prickle Weedkiller or Grosafe Prickle Weedkiller or Yates Turfix.
