June in the Garden

Colour your garden for winter!

We have oodles of fantastic foliage and flower colour to brighten your garden.

The first of our new season roses are due in this month - come in and choose an all-time favourite or maybe something new!

INDOOR GARDEN

We are “the Best Place” in Tauranga for Indoor Plants!

After the 2020 Lockdown, people have embraced the “Indoor Garden”.  We have an impressive range of Indoor Plants including the popular Ficus lyrata, Monstera delicosa, String of Pearls, as well as plenty of larger grade plants for the office, or workplace and modern home.

We also have flowering plants for indoors like Kalanchoes, Cyclamen, Anthirriums and Orchids.  Come and have a look!

FLOWER GARDEN

For gorgeous Autumn/Winter flowers plant Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Pieris (Lily of the Valley), Camellias, Grevillease and Ericas (white, pink or red) ... all are looking stunning now!

ROSES:
Plant new season roses!  Ensure that you dig in plenty of 'Magic' Compost and sheep pellets or ‘Magic’ Garden Mix at the time of planting and add Ican Slow Food.  To view our large, comprehensive 2024 Rose Collection click here.  Many more roses arriving in Spring too, including some new releases like Feeling Better, Julie Marguerite and Truly Special.  Order now to ensure you get what you want.

ANNUALS:
Remove summer annuals that have now finished flowering and plant new annual seedlings for spectacular colour in your winter garden. The colours and varieties are many - pansy, viola, primula, polyanthus, stock, poppy, snapdragon, dianthus, ornamental kale plus so many more.  Add Ican Organic Vegetable Food once your seedlings start growing to encourage flowering.

PERENNIALS:
Plant perennials - Cyclamen, wall flowers and Hellebores (winter rose).  We have a great range of Hellebores instore now.  They are great for under trees or shady spots.

CONTAINER PLANTING:
Hanging baskets or pots filled with colourful flowers will brighten your patios and verandas over the Winter months. We have a large selection of pots in many shapes and colours.  The lightweight troughs and pots are very popular.

KITCHEN GARDEN

For winter kitchen garden harvests, plant:

Garlic, shallots, broad beans, winter lettuce, onions, beetroot, spinach, silver beet, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower...

Herb favourites - parsley, rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme, chives...

Add more goodness to the soil when replanting - dig in Ican Real Blood & Bone, sheep pellets, and compost or vege mix – feed with Ican Organic Vegetable Food and/or Ican Ocean Grow which is a fantastic liquid fish fertiliser which can be applied regularly and will really get your veges growing.

The cold of Winter is no reason not to have salads - plant seedlings in a container with fresh potting mix and place in a warm sheltered spot.  Even better, get yourself a Vegepod which has a micro crop cover all included – perfect for those new plants.  Otherwise a greenhouse is great for growing your favourite veges all year round - come and see the top quality range of Winter Gardenz Greenhouses we have available.  Enjoy a Bloom Café lunch inside our lovely Glasshouse.

To replenish soil nutrients and improve soil structure plant green crops of mustard or lupin in areas of the vege garden that will not be used over winter.  These can be dug back into the soil prior to your Spring veges being planted.

FRUIT, CITRUS, BERRIES

Field grown bundles of Strawberry plants are available now and this is the best time to plant - plant in the garden bed, vege patch or in hanging baskets and planter towers!

Plant citrus trees and keep healthy during winter with fruit from your own garden - mandarins, oranges, lemons and limes!    For small sections see our dwarf trees including our Ican Harvest selection.

Maintain your regular fruit tree spray programme.  It is important to spray with the correct product at the correct time so please ask one of our knowledgeable staff, come in for your copy of our "Fruiting Plants Health Care Programme" or click here.

TREES & SHRUBS

Plant new trees and shrubs!  Stake for support if required and fertilise with Ican 24 Month Slow Food fertiliser:

For the birds plant - Coprosma, Corokia, Five Finger, Flax, Grevillea, Kaka-Beak, Banksia, Kowhai, Pohutukawa, Protea, Rewarewa, Viburnum, Waratah ...

Plant new hedges – some fantastic hedging plants are Japanese Box, Camellia Setsugekka, Camellia Fairy Blush, Corokia, Teucrium, and NZ's favourite Griselinia Broadway Mint!  We have a good selection available in big numbers.

Plant:
Leucadendrons - many varieties available giving great winter colour and they're fantastic for floral work;
Nandina Gulf Stream - spectacular foliage display.

Box Hedging - spray with Grosafe Free Flo Copper and Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil and alternate with Buxus Blight Fighter to prevent the spread of Box Blight (Japanese Box is far more resistant than English Box to Box Blight).

Now is the time to move any trees or shrubs if you need to, so they can establish over Winter.  Remember to prune anything you shift, by at least one-third.

TREES FOR SMALL GARDENS

Beautifully shaped standards make spectacular landscape features - camellia, michellia, choisya, kowhais and loropetalums are available now.

Weeping maples are ideal when space is limited.  Cercis Forest Pansy or redbud is a gorgeous show.

Flowering Crab Apples look stunning and have luscious bright red fruit which are great for jellies and preserves.

Dwarf fruit trees and citrus are ideal for small gardens and also grow well in pots and containers and yield an abundance of fruit.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

Good soil, feeding and watering is the key to great plants, flowers, fruit and vege production.

Fertilise houseplants with liquid Ican Fast Food.  Feed plants with the respective food eg Citrus Food for citrus, Strawberry Food for strawberries and Rose Food for roses.

Slow release Novatec is ideal for trees, shrubs, palms, fruit trees.

Hygiene is important in the garden so clear away diseased leaves and prunings and sterilise secateurs, hedge trimmers etc before and after use (bleach is a good sterilant).

Protect frost tender plants with frost cloth at night or spray with Vaporgard.  Vaporgard is an excellent organic product which is easily sprayed over foliage and provides up to 3 months protection.

Pests and Diseases - check all plants regularly - it's easier to deal with them early before they take hold and do too much damage.

If fungus and bugs are present they need to be kept under control with regular spraying.  We recommend:

Grosafe Free Flo Copper to control fungus diseases on all fruit, veges and ornamentals.
Grosafe Enspray 99 Oil for the control of sucking insects on all fruit, veges and ornamentals.
Success Ultra for caterpillars, thrips and leafroller.

Apply Blitzem, Quash (if you have animals) or Baysol (long acting) to control slugs and snails - particularly around new seedlings.

Roses - continue your regular spray programme - to view our Rose & Ornamental Health Care Programme click here or call in for a copy.

Mulch to suppress weeds, preserve water and add nutrients.  We recommend Pea Straw or our ‘Magic’ Feeding Mulch.

Happy Gardening and remember, our knowledgeable staff are always available for planting and pest/disease control advice and to ensure you use the right products for your requirements.
